Power Supplies
Omron offers a variety of general-purpose Power Supplies, including DIN rail-mounted and equipment-integrated types. Additionally, they provide reliable options like the S8VS with replacement notifications and the Buffer Block for momentary power interruptions.
What is a Power Supply?
To operate electronic components safely, stable DC voltage is required as they are not compatible with AC power, which can cause damage. Regulated DC Power Supplies, converting commercial AC power into regulated DC power, offers the solution.
The control of these supplies typically involves two methods: Switch-mode Power Supplies, favored for their compactness, light weight, and high efficiency, and Linear Power Supplies.
Configuration and Principles
Switch-mode Power Supplies
Switch-mode Power Supplies convert commercial AC power to high-frequency power through semiconductor switching, ensuring efficient, compact, and lightweight power supplies for electronic devices.
Advantages
Highly efficient, Compact, and light. A wide input voltage range.
Disadvantages
Noise results from high-frequency switching, and there’s a substantial inrush current on the primary side.
Selection Methods
Select a model of Power Supply according to your application.
Input Voltage
Choose the appropriate Power Supply based on the available input voltage, considering each Power Supply’s input voltage range.
Output Capacity
To ensure compatibility, choose a Power Supply with a rated output capacity exceeding the maximum load capacity, calculated as Output Voltage (V) multiplied by Load Current (I).
Operating Methods
To enhance output capacity, voltage, and reliability, assess available operating methods. Note that not all Power Supply models support every method.
Additional Functions
Check the required functions.
Protection Functions
All models are equipped with overvoltage protection and overload protection.
Shape and Mounting Method
Various Power Supplies come in different shapes. Choose the most appropriate one for your application, and consider the available mounting brackets.
Installation
Each model specifies its mounting direction and space requirements. Ensure the Power Supply has enough space to allow for proper airflow.
Life Expectancy
The Power Supply’s warranty and life expectancy depend on the model. When selecting, consider your application’s needs.
Warranty Period: If used as specified, the Power Supply is repaired or replaced free during this period if it fails.
Life Expectancy: This period reflects satisfactory performance under conditions akin to actual use. It’s derived from temperature rise tests, not guaranteed.
Safety Standards
You can choose models meeting UL, CSA, and VDE or EN standards. Check the Power Supply datasheets for certification and compliance details.
